  3. Books - "Steal Like An Artist" by Austin Kleon

This is one of my all-time favorite books. It is so uplifting and I love Austin’s interpretation of where an artist gets ideas.  I finished reading this book for the first time and had the feeling that I could really do this! Since it is a very easy, quick read, anyone could return to the book for continued help in sparking creativity. I have reread this book many times over the years. It was first published in 2012 and is still very relevant today.

Where does inspiration come from for a creative person? Each artist has unique experiences to draw ideas from and interpret in their own way. How many of you follow Pinterest, Facebook, Instagram, etc. to get ideas for an upcoming party, music suggestions, recipes, interior design ideas, and information on art techniques? This list could go on indefinitely. Austin’s idea gives us permission to steal good ideas and make them our own. Personally, I love following other creatives online and I select what might work for me. It could be as simple as a color combination I had not considered previously. One of my sons has a liquid light show business called Flooded Sun Liquid Lights. (He is on Instagram, Facebook, and YouTube) I love looking at his posts and focusing on the color combinations he projects on bands and stages. Some of these colors I would never have considered combining in the past, but seeing it on his post makes me reconsider.

I plan on continuing to steal like an artist like Austin Kleon suggests and I hope you consider trying this too. Pick up a copy of this book and see where it takes you. Have fun!
